You don’t have to wait until things become more difficult before reaching out for support.
Medicare Mental Health Check In is a free Australian Government service designed to provide early mental health and wellbeing support to people aged 16 years and over living in Australia.
Medicare Mental Health Check In is designed for early and mild mental health concerns. It is not a crisis or emergency service and does not replace urgent or ongoing mental health care.
If you or someone else is in immediate danger, experiencing a mental health emergency, or at risk of suicide or self-harm, please call 000 or attend your nearest hospital emergency department.
Support when you need it
Medicare Mental Health Check In provides free digital programs designed to help you develop practical skills for managing some of life’s common challenges, including:

Fears and everyday challenges
The programs use evidence-based approaches to help you better understand how you’re feeling, develop practical coping strategies and build confidence in managing your mental wellbeing.
You can work through the programs independently, in your own time, or receive additional guidance from a qualified mental health practitioner via phone or video.
No referral or diagnosis required
One of the great things about Medicare Mental Health Check In is that you don’t need a mental health diagnosis or a referral from your GP to get started.
The service is completely free, with no out-of-pocket costs.
It’s designed particularly for people who may be beginning to experience mental health challenges and would like some additional support before those challenges become more difficult to manage..
How do I get started?
The first step is to contact Medicare Mental Health on 1800 595 212 and let them know you’re interested in Medicare Mental Health Check In. You can also request someone to call you back by clicking here, and filling in the form.
You’ll speak with a trained professional who can discuss what you’re experiencing and help determine whether the service is suitable for you. If another type of support would be more appropriate, they can also help connect you with other services.
